 ABOUT HOMETOWN HEROES
"Hometown Heroes" - Monroe, North Carolina
Donnie Ray Dixon is the founder of “Hometown Heroes” in Monroe, NC that started approximately seven years ago. He worked as a Public Safety Officer with the Monroe Police Department. He answered a call for a woman receiving harassing phone calls from her husband. He started talking to little Matthew and he told Donnie that he had leukemia. One thing led to another and Donnie found out that they were about to be evicted out of their apartment where they lived. This is when “Hometown Heroes” began. Donnie got together golf tournaments to help pay the rent and other expenses that the family needed. It wasn’t long until he had four more children on the list to help out with expenses. Two had terminal illnesses and two were car accident victims. There are now a total of ten children that continues to get help financially.  It worked.“Hometown Heroes” has snowballed with more people getting involved in helping to raise thousands of dollars with benefits and rides for the children and their families. As Donnie puts it: “Big kids helping little kids”. In 2002 the “Hometown Heroes” went on their first ride from Murphy, NC to Manteo, NC for a four-day ride. In 2003 they went to Gettysburg, Pa. For the four-day ride. In 2004, the four-day ride is planned for Nashville, TN. Last year at Christmas each family was allowed $500.00 for Christmas shopping at Wal-Mart on Christmas Eve. After the store shut down and all employees left, some of the “Hometown Heroes” met with the children and their families for a free run of Wal-Mart filling their buggies with gifts of their choice. Besides helping with these “special kids” and their families, “Hometown Heroes” helps out with ‘Toys for Tots’ at Christmas.Donnie has worked hard and given a lot of his time for these children. After his retirement from Public Safety work, he plans to put in more time for “Hometown Heroes.” He has brought lots of smiles to these special children.
